It is natural to experience periods of sadness & low mood, and this often passes in its own time. However for some people, these periods persist, are intense and impact on other aspects of their life.

The symptoms of depression include a depressed mood, and a loss of pleasure or interest in previously enjoyed activities, that lasts for at least two weeks. In addition to this, a range of other symptoms may be present:

  • Changes in weight or appetite (when not dieting)
  • Lack of concentration
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Pervasive feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Agitated or slowed physical movements
  • Fatigue & loss of energy

In some cases, depression can lead to suicidal thoughts. If you have been having thoughts about death or dying, please contact Lifeline 13 11 14, or ask your GP for help. If neither of these options is available to you, go to your nearest hospital emergency department.
